Speed painting

Doing enviroments this week so thought i would get going by doing a speed painting first, took 1 hour and no references so just experimenting with shapes....

American gods - Shadows

If you haven't read Neil Gaimans epic " American Gods" then i  highly recommend it!. The character designs below are based on my interpretation of the character Shadow Moon,  the main protagonist of the story, he is 32 yrs old, his nickname is"puppy" and he has just come out of prison after serving 3 years. His wife Laura was just killed in a car crash and he finds out that she was having an affair with his friend Robbie. Throughout the story other characters underestimate his ability and think he is dopey. He takes on the job of protecting the shady Mr Wednesday. Below are my first designs for the character.....

this painting is a revision of the excelsior poster that i did, i am entering it in a competition and so far have painted the most of it, but just decided to add text and  see how that affects the painting and storytelling.

Mr Apple and Miss Blackberry

My task this week was to come up with "a contemporary couple". So I researched family, friends, movies, facebook to get an idea of how to  visualise this. Statistically more couples are co habiting rather than marrying these days due to recession, also we live in a technology obsessed society. How many people do you know that dont communicate via social networking sites.We work longer hours, less pay and more stress and all these elements affect our relationships. I took all this into consideration when drawing the couple. I chose to illustrate the couple in a toon painterly style.

The story so far....

Mr Apple and Miss Blackberry live together in a flat in Manchester. They have been together 2 years and have a 1 year old son.

Miss Blackberry is off for a two week vacation to Bermuda with her girls " leaving Mr Apple to takecare of their child. Hence the reason he is looking up babysitters on his ipad so he can watch England play in the World Cup!

The next stage is to swop ideas with a random course mate and continue an idea in their visual style!

Face painting

This week i had feedback on the movie poster, and my main problem is faces at angles, so i am now practicing drawing/painting faces at angles, below is my first attempt. I started off painting, then experimenting with filters and then overlaying textures. This week i will be continuing with the "shift" and "cursor 10 " projects and designing characters for a contemporary couple, whatever that means! :-)

Silohuette drawing

Just some quick silohuette drawings for a character i am working on, next i will choose the appropriate silohuette for the character and work it up.

Movie teaser posters and revised main poster

This week i had to create teaser posters from my main poster, i have used custom brushes to change the style of the character posters and also taken out the hands from the original poster as it was confusing as they overlapped the protagonist.

American Gods

After being recommended by a friend i have just started reading Neil Gaimans epic novel  " American Gods". I plan to read it over the weekend and start on producing concept art for characters, enviroments and key moments in the story. This novel is a visual feast with mythological characters and gods at war so should get some interesting art. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gods

S.W.O.T Analysis

 This week i have been asked to critically reflect on my progression on the course. Swot anaylsis is usually used for businesses but here i have used it for my personal reflection. I am working in my weaknesses and hopefully by the end of the course will be better equipped to get work.

Strengths 1] Work ethic – disciplined and motivated. 2) Fertile imagination 3) Colour theory 4) Knowledge of Art, Films, Games, Literature 5) Skills – drawing/painting traditional media and digital - Photoshop, Painter, Sketchbook pro 6) Passionate about subject	Weaknesses 1) Work too fast, need to focus on quality. 2) Develop a range of styles = more employable. 3) Product design – game assets/ sequential art  - storyboards/comics 4) Environments – interior/ exterior/ matte paintings 5) 3D software knowledge 6) Fundamentals – anatomy, light and shadow, form perspective, need to be consistent in every painting
Opportunities 1) – Concept Artist – videogames/ movie industries 2) – Freelance Illustration 3) – Children’s books/ novel covers 4) Comics 5) Theatre – set design/ costumes/ posters 6) Card industry	Threats 1) Recession = less jobs! 2) A lot of experienced concept artists to compete with. 3) Have to be at a professional standard by the end of course. 4) Money, loan repayments. 5) Game companies in UK closing,  6) Not many concept art companies.

Life drawing class

Tried a new approach this week, firstly by drawing the male model in motion with pencil and then by using brown, blue and white paint to draw the female and male models. As there was no under drawing this was challenging and made me think more about where i painted the lines to add the tone and form.

Dante's Paradiso colour roughs
