A traditional approach
This week i was reading an interview in Imagine FX with Ian McCaig (concept artist for Star wars) and he said " the great thing about digital paint is that you change your mind forever, and the terrible thing about digital paint is that you can change your mind forever. I miss those days when you had to live with your mistakes, so i've banned Ctrl - z from my workshop".
This advice resonated with me, so the following paintings were done with one chalk brush, one canvas and any mistakes were repainted. No custom brushes, filters, or textures added. Sometimes you start down one path and end up creating a completely diffeerent vision that isnt even related, so with these i have tried to stay true to the story and focus on the basics of composition and values.
And if that didnt bore you, you can check out the painting processes for these pictures here -

2)The Negotiator - Near the end of the book this scene shows Shadow Moon trying to stop the gods marching to war.
3) Red State - In his dream Shadow is climbing a mountain of skulls...
4) Flight of the Navigator - Shadow and Mr Wednesday escape the agents of the new gods when their camper van takes flight...
